"THE WAY POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT IS CARRIED OUT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE AMOUNT."
~B.F SKINNER
APPLIED BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS (ABA) is a science that is aimed at understanding human behaviour in clear & simple terms and these principles of human behavior are then applied to change socially significant behaviors of a person. It includes behaviors that are observable (like a tantrum, eating behavior and so on) and covert (thoughts and feelings). This science has its roots in Psychology and can be applied to individuals across lifespan.
It's proven to be effective in a wide range of behaviors that includes simple skills like tying a shoe lace, grooming, eating (refusal or excess), compliance, hygiene skills, classroom management to complex behaviors like time management, fear/panic in situations, phobia to certain objects, and increasing productivity in work.
ABA is based on the philosophy that organisms learn things based on their consequence. This either leads to a behavior being strongly established (i.e behaviour is likely to occur more in future) or weakened (i.e. behavior is likely to occur less in future). Sometimes these behaviors (deficit or excess) pose problems for the individual as well as for the people around him and thus the natural thing would be to replace these problem behaviors with more appropriate behaviors. Thus, helping the individual adapt well to the same situation in future. In addition, teaching individuals skills that are deficit is one of the important part of ABA services. Areas of skill acquisition include language areas, activities of daily living and playskills for children and teenagers. Vocational skills and community mainstreaming with functional living skills is aimed for adults as well.
In ABA, the focus is on changing the environment of the person. The emphasis is always on how to make it motivating for the person to do a certain set of behaviors or how to make the person repeat the desired behaviors. The setting up of environment that motivates the person and makes the person repeat behaviors are the important goals of an ABA practitioner.
